Working Principle: Water softening systems are the process of removing calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) ions that cause hardness in water. This process is based on the replacement of calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions by passing through the cationic resin bed. Thus, the hardness of the water is removed by the ion exchange method. Sodium-based cationic resins, whose hardness removal capacity is full, are regenerated with salty water depending on time, flow rate and effluent hardness value.
The hardness ions in the water precipitate on the heat transfer surfaces, forming a crust layer and causing energy consumption. In addition, flow losses occur in pipes due to cross-sectional narrowing.
Tanks: Epoxy painted carbon steel tanks or galvanized sheet metal tanks are used in large capacity systems. In low capacity systems, FRP tank is preferred.
Control and Automation System: Control mechanisms of water softener devices consist of manual systems with valves, fully automatic control valves or PLC-controlled automation units. Fleck, Sieta or Autotrol brand valves are used as control valves and these valves perform regeneration processes depending on time and flow rate. In PLC controlled automation units, on the other hand, the regeneration process can be performed depending on time and flow by using pneumatic or electrically actuated valves.
